Our selection process has four steps. Please review the full page before applying; the application link will appear below once applications open.

  1. Confirm you're eligible.
  2. Attend an information session.
  3. Apply online.
  4. Attend invite-only interviews.

1. Confirm You're Eligible

  • First-year undergraduate students at WashU are eligible, regardless of prior medical experience. All first-years may apply.
  • Sophomores are eligible only if they already have an EMT-B license. Licensed sophomore students complete an adjusted onboarding program that requires an EMT-B license.
  • Juniors and seniors are not eligible to apply due to our training timeline.

2. Attend an Information Session

To be eligible to apply, you must attend one of our three information sessions during the first week of programming (second week of class). Each session covers the same material, so you only need to attend one.

  • Monday, August 31 at 7:00 pm in DUC 276
  • Tuesday, September 1 at 7:00 pm in DUC 276
  • Thursday, September 3 at 8:00 pm in DUC 234

Please contact estselections@gmail.com if you have concerns about attending. Applications from students who do not attend an information session will not be considered.

3. Apply Online

The written application opens August 28, 2026 and closes September 4, 2026 at 11:59 pm. It consists of three questions:

  • Why EST? (What do you intend to bring to EST? What do you intend to get out of EST?) (150-word maximum)
  • Answer one of the following two questions:
    • Describe a time you made a mistake that affected someone else. How did you handle it, and what would you do differently now? (250-word maximum)
    • Tell us about a time you felt overwhelmed but still had responsibilities to others. How did you respond? (250-word maximum)
  • Tell us about a time you contributed to a team's success without being the leader. What did you do, and why was your role important? (250-word maximum)

4. Attend Invite-Only Interviews

After the written application, selected applicants are invited to at least two in-person interview rounds. If we receive a high volume of applications, we may hold a third round before selecting the final roster.

Interview schedule:

  • Round 1: September 12 or 13, depending on the applicant
  • Round 2: September 26 or 27, depending on the applicant
  • Round 3 (if necessary): October 10

We cannot guarantee make-up interviews. If you anticipate a conflict, contact the selections committee as soon as possible so we have the best chance of finding an alternative date.
